Mord på Vibrafonen | Chapter 2: A Crime Novel by Roxnakowsky — English Abstract

 

This second instalment of the neo-noir crime serial Mord på Vibrafonen (Murder on the Vibraphone), published exclusively in Tidsskriftet KULTURINFORMATION, continues the atmospheric first-person narrative of a former PET (Danish Security and Intelligence Service) operative whose enforced retirement is abruptly interrupted by a 3:26 AM phone call from the shadowy Dorn-Jensen of a newly established counter-terrorism unit. Roxnakowsky writes in a tradition directly descended from the American hardboiled school of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and their iconic protagonists Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade — the laconic, world-weary investigator navigating a corrupt institutional landscape with sardonic intelligence and professional precision. The prose style is taut, economical and cinematically precise: short declarative sentences, a sharply observant first-person voice and an atmosphere of controlled menace that owes as much to the rain-slicked streets of 1940s Los Angeles as to a November Copenhagen night. The chapter additionally delivers an acerbic and highly entertaining critique of the contemporary Scandinavian crime fiction industry and its proliferating female authorship — a narrative digression executed with the dry wit characteristic of Chandler at his best. The chapter closes with the protagonist cycling through the November darkness toward the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Panum, where a body — and the central mystery of the serial — awaits.
